New
Certificate and Degree Programs at UNC-Chapel Hill
Prepare Emergency Managers of the Future
The Community Preparedness and Disaster Management Program has designed
a
comprehensive curriculum to prepare emergency responders and managers
at every level.
At the Associates (Community College) level, students gain individual
job skills. At the
Bachelor level, graduates will achieve a broad appreciation for the field.
At the Master's
level students are able to specialize in one of three areas--Disaster
Management, Business
Continuity or Homeland Security.
To this end, the Community Preparedness and Disaster Management Program
has expanded
its programs. In addition to the current certificate program in
Disaster Management, which
will be offered each January and July, the program now includes a Business
Continuity
program to be taught in October, and a Homeland Security variant to begin
next in April 2005.
Along with the CEM for the Disaster Management course, collaborations
with the credentialing
agencies are being sought to provide the CBCP with the Business Continuity
program and the
CPP with the Homeland Security program.
Also in the planning stages is a Bachelor of Science in Disaster Management.
The program
will be housed within the School of Public Health, but will be a stand-alone
degree with an
inter-disciplinary flavor. Courses from across campus, from Geology
to Journalism, will be
selected to meet the educational requirements to reach the Disaster Management
Competencies critical for an entry level professional in Disaster Management.
The degree
will be offered both to students on campus and through distance learning.
A Master's of Science in Disaster Management is also being planned.
This will be THE
defining program for those desiring a leadership position in the Emergency
Management
world of the future. At the Master's level students will specialize
in one of three areas:
Disaster Management, Business Continuity or Homeland Security. Emphasis
will be placed
on understanding systems and how they interoperate (or fail to). A
graduate from this
program will be suited to be a Fire Chief, Police Chief, Supervisor or
Department Head in
Emergency Management, or a leader at FEMA or in the private sector. This
program will
be available as a distance-learning degree.
While these programs are still in the planning stages, the first two courses
have been
announced for the growing program. Both work for either a BSDM or
MSDM. They are:
HPAA-115 - Terrorism and Community Preparedness - A series
of guest speakers who will
address various topics in the course title (1 Credit)
HPAA-116
- "The Military and the Homeland - Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow"
- A 3 credit
course looking at the evolution of military support and operations at
home, and how that has
changed post 9-11 and what the future may hold.
